Ode to the Old Oak...
Every so often we’ll do a focus on something in the wild; mammals, reptiles, birds, plants, trees, wildflower or whatever…
To kick us off we’ll start with Trees.

The Oak’s fruit is the acorn, appropriate to begin our focus there I think.
There are many varieties of Oak, we‘ll focus on the English Oak.
As a deciduous tree, the Oak will begin growing its leaves in the Spring, flower in May and bare fruit (the Acorn) in September - October.

The wedge shaped leaf with a 2-10mm stalk grows anywhere from 5-10cm long, with 3-6 lobes on each side.

The green and yellow catkins flower alongside the reddish coloured stalked spikes which produce 1-6 flowers in May.
The fruit of the Oak - the acorn, grows usually in groups of three on long stalks (2-10cm). Each acorn is approximately 2-3cm long and sits in a scaly cup which ripens from green to brown.
The English Oak is distributed across Europe and throughout the British Isles and can be found anywhere from woodlands and parks to river valleys... The English Oak.
